Athel Loren and the Lost Kindred of the Wood Elves

In long ages past there dwelt amongst the Wood Elven Kindreds of Athel Loren a Kindred whose way of life was closely interwoven with the strange and beautiful tree named the Wythel. In those days there were groves of these large coniferous trees, the needles of which were likened to the colour of jade and it was amongst these groves the Wythel Kindred dwelt. Yet, for no reason any Elf has since discovered, the groves of Wythel slowly diminished over the centuries until there were few in number of these magnificent trees left in the whole of Athel Loren.

The time came, however, when as the last of the Wythel trees started to show signs of ailing and began to die, that a council was summoned . There were sometimes rumours borne on Eagles' wings of Wythel trees on the far side of the Misty Mountains and the Wythel Kindred was of one mind to depart Athel Loren in search of them, although there would be great sadness at the parting. The King and Queen of the Wood heard what the elders had to say and in their hearts saw the desire to seek out their beloved Wythel trees and so gave the Wythel Kindred their blessing to depart.

The Venerable One, Lord Barku

For some time scouts from Athel Loren remained in touch with the Kindred as they travelled into the North East but as distance increased, contact eventually ceased and over time the Wythel Kindred were thought to have disappeared and perished in the harsh winter snowstorms. They were never to be seen again by any of the fair folk of Athel Loren who, everafter, referred to them as the Lost Kindred.

The Lost Kindred, however, continued on in their search for the Wythel trees of this wild and untamed region and, without even realizing, learnt to adapt to this new landscape, leading a nomadic existence which over generations became their way of life. They have never to this day found one of the Wythel trees rumoured to grow here and have instead assumed a protective role to the great forest tracts of pine and birch and the high mountain crags and passes where they have gained the friendship of the mighty Mountain Eagles and swift Snow Hawks. The Wythel tree has become a sacred symbol to the Grey Elves, as the Lost Kindred call themselves, painted and engraved onto war gear or tattooed onto the skin of the Kindred's heroes and mages ensuring the power of the Earth courses strongly through their bodies and is at one with them. Each summer bands of warriors set off in search of the Sacred Tree, a journey seen as a coming of age.

Although the Lost Kindred's way of life is by it's nature one of seclusion, they often have contact with other races such as Orcs and Goblins, Skaven and the marauding war bands of the many Norsca tribes who roam these unforgiving lands. Enemies are swiftly and mercilessly dealt with, usually being decoyed into the deep forest or ambushed in precipitous sided ravines, never to be seen again. In these troubled times, however, the frequency and size of these raiding bands of northern warriors in particular has increased and they are now also often accompanied by foul abominations, the filth of Chaos.

The Lost Kindred are increasingly engaged in violent protection of their adopted homelands, a task they do not relish but one which will not find them wanting.
